Arizona Moves Forward on Mail-in Ballots

From Arizona Republic - 5/22/2020

"Election officials in Arizona are planning to send an application for a mail ballot to every voter who has not signed up to receive one, which proponents argue is one way of ensuring
fears of the new coronavirus do not dampen participation in the 2020 election. President Donald Trump has assailed similar plans in other states, but he hasn't spoken out
about the plans in Arizona."

Trump,  blasted election officials in Michigan and Nevada this week, arguing that such steps are unnecessary and making the unfounded claim that voting by mail is rife with
fraud. “Mail-in ballots are very dangerous. There's tremendous fraud involved and tremendous illegality,” the president told reporters at the White House on Wednesday, threatening to cut certain funding for Michigan if it proceeded."

Arizona continues to lead on encouraging mail-in voting even if the Republicans in the legislature and the president are at best skeptical and worst hostile to the idea.  Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs has indicated that an early ballot application will go out to everyone not currently on the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL).  Already over 60 percent of Arizona voters vote by mail.  Earlier in the month all 15 county election officials (representing both parties) asked for permission to send ballots to all voters not on the PEVL for the 2020 primary and general elections.  Republicans in the legislature objected.

The objections are not based in a reality.  Several states have conducted all mail-in voting without significant security or fraud issues.  Some cities in Arizona already conduct municipal elections by mail.

While the president has voiced objections to Michigan and Nevada sending out vote-by-mail applications, he has remained silent on Arizona's plans.  One could ask why?

Voters should continue to let their elected officials know how they feel on the issue.

In the meantime I urge both parties to work hard to get as many registered voters signed up for the PEVL as possible.  Democrats seem organized to do this.  If Republicans are not interested, they will only have themselves to blame after election day!
